With the release of Team Fusion patch 4.5, a.k.a. “IL2 Cliff of Dover Blitz”, we can now consider that a new great period in warbird simulation has started. This release marks a new chapter in the IL2 Franchise.

Back in 2011, 1C released IL2 Cliff of Dover. While the potential was there, the game was in a terrible state at release, with many bugs and crashes driving the community crazy. Review were bad, and after a few “damage control” patches, the game development was just dropped. Instead of saving the sinking ship, 1C bailed out, and efforts were redirected in a new game, “IL2 Battle of Stalingrad”.

Cliff of Dover being salvaged by fans

In the meantime, some courageous modders decided to patch the game themselves. Team Fusion dedicated all these years in keeping IL2 Cliff of Dover in a playable state. And after all these years, the efforts paid off. 1C, recovering the full right over the series, made them the official developer for IL2 Cliff of Dover, and dropped them the source code. Out of this partnership, patch 4.5 “Blitz” was developed, and Is pretty much the rebirth of the game.

IL2 Cliff of Dover “Blitz” adds many features. The game now supports 64bits and Dx11. It now has 24 additional aircrafts, along with many AI aircraft, ground and naval additions. They are many improvements to the realism, from improved airframe simulation to these lovely trees with collision model. While this 4.5 release is just a massive patch, it allowed the young studio to discover the source code and learn how to work with it. In parallel, they already have a DLC in development, based on the african theather.

Into a new Warbird Golden Age

The partnership with Team Fusion was a stunning move from 1C studios, bringing all warbirds fans under their umbrella. Now that Ubisoft is out of the equation, the two IL2 games are now reunited under their banner and developed in parallel, covering a good part of WW2. The plan is to have both title expanding in their own directions without competing directly:  Team Fusion is developing a Mediterranean DLC for Cliff of Dover, while 777/1C will prepare (among others things) a late war DLC, and may expand into the Pacific Theater in the upcoming years.

With these two games, sure virtual pilot will be busy in the upcoming years! With these two series …and DCS WW2, warbird pilots will be busy for the upcoming years!
